Nostalgic Memories of Homeland in the Life-stories of Latvian Exiles

Kopsavilkums

The paper intends to analyse life-story interviews of exile Latvians gathered at the Latvian National Oral History Archive by focusing on nostalgic memories of homeland and their impact on the lives of different generations of exiles. The analysis of the biographical sources affirms that the loss of one’s home and homeland can lead to a condition described in the scientific literature as nostalgic disorientation (Papadopoulos 2002), as well as the fact that the nostalgia is not only focused on the physical place, but on people, interpersonal relationships and the environment in general.
